The starting signal for EatAbility, the project that helps integrating young people with disabilities in the working world, is given!

30.10.2019 - Italy

After a long experimental phase of two years, „EatAbility“, the project co-organized by Markas, has been successfully launched in the municipalities of Villa Guardia and Uggiate, both in the province of Como. The initiative is dedicated to young people with disabilities and aims to facilitate their entry into the working life as well as to offer them their first work experiences.

The project started at the end of September and focuses on Fabio, Annalisa, Davide, Andrea, Michele and Simone – six young people with disabilities who are now employed in the school complex of Civello (in Villa Guardia) to distribute, on three days a week, meals to 70 pupils of the primary school. In the municipality of Uggiate Trevano, the initiative involves Greta, Valentina, Andrea, Kadrie, Paolo, Silvia, Elena and Enza (8 young people of the Lurate Caccivio Social and Education Centre). The eight of them will be responsible for distributing meals to about 100 students from the Uggiate School Institute. Their main tasks include the preparation of the canteen tables, the serving of meals as well as the cleaning of the canteen.
Participants EatAbility
From the very start the concept met great approval from the young participants and their families, who see “EatAbility” as an important opportunity for further training and integration into the working life. The project not only helps the young employees to feel valued, they also see themselves as an important part of a society in which they can play an active role and make their contribution.

In order to participate, the interested adolescents had to attend the previously planned safety courses. The participation in the HACCP course, which dealt with the hazard analysis, was of particular importance in order to teach them how to deal with critical points concerning the storage and processing of food as well as the preparation and serving of meals.

EatAbility is the result of a close and successfull collaboration between Markas, the Consortium for Social Services of Olgiate, the municipality of Olgiate Trevano and the association "L'isola che non c'è".
