On the way to a more sustainable future: What is Markas doing?

„Sustainability“ is a word that increasingly accompanies us through our everyday lives. We are not only encouraged to act and think in a more environmentally responsible way in our private lives, but also in our business routine. Within the last weeks we have told you what Markas has already done to become more environmentally conscious in its cleaning service and communal feeding service. Now we’d like to tell you about the measures we have introduced in our company in order to contribute to a more sustainable future.

But what is a sustainable company and why is sustainability this important for a business?

Let’s make a short digression to clarify these questions. In this context, we need to talk about Corporate Social Responsibility. In short, Corporate Social Responsibility refers to the commitment a company makes to the environment and the society and how it acts accordingly. In this way, companies contribute voluntarily to sustainable development going beyond legal requirements. There are several reasons that can motivate a company to act in a more sustainable way. Sustainability is a tangible concept, a verifiable quality criteria that underlines the credibility of a company. In addition, sustainability also promotes the positive image of a company, strengthens customer loyalty and permits motivated employees to increasingly identify with the company.

Sustainability starts with ourselves

What does Markas undertake to promote sustainability in its own company?

For us, the protection of our environment has always been a very important issue and represents a focal point of our mission. We are very keen to develop our sustainability concept with concrete and strategic measures to act as resource-saving as possible. In this context, a project was launched in 2018 to analyse critical aspects regarding sustainability, to define improvement measures and thus make Markas an entirely sustainable company.

Our new headquarters is a symbol of our efforts to act in more environmentally conscious way. In addition to the WELL-Gold certification, which prioritises the wellbeing of the employees in their working environment, the new building has also been awarded with the CasaClima A certification. The building is equipped with an intelligent light management system that makes optimal usage of the natural light and (thanks to its sensors) adjusts the consumption in an ideal way. All operating facilities meet the highest energy efficiency classes and also the electricity supplying our offices derives from 100% renewable sources. In order to reduce the consumption of plastic bottles, each floor has been equipped with drinking fountains. Furthermore, each floor has an ecological isle with graphical information for the correct waste separation. We are also increasingly focusing on environmentally friendly alternatives for our service cars to contribute in reducing the NO2 concentration in the air. Of more than 400 cars (electric cars included), 67% belong to Euroclass 5 or higher.

Compensation of CO2 emissions

In order to counteract the CO2 emissions produced during the execution of the cleaning service and food preparation in the canteens, we regularly support regional and international projects dedicated to the protection of the environment. In this regard we work closely with institutions that are specialized in national reforestation measures to increase green areas or support already existing ones. In this way, we help to minimise negative environmental impacts and make an important contribution to climate protection. As one of the first companies worldwide, Markas also uses the innovative “CFP System Approach” which additionally allows us to calculate and quantify the environmental impact of our services and thus take efficient measures to offset CO2 emissions.
Animal welfare

A heart for animals

Not only the reduction of CO2 emissions but also the species-appropriate handling of farm animals is one of our major concerns. Since 2017, for example, we have been striving to significantly reduce the usage of eggs from cage-rearing. Our goal is to obtain 100% of the eggs we use for the preparation of the meals proposed in our canteens from floor management or free-range production within 2024. In order to realize this ambitious goal, we began to take the first important measures at the end of 2017, which already allowed us to reduce the usage of eggs from cage-rearing by 26.49%. Meanwhile, 23.62% of the eggs we purchase come from free-range farming.
