Markas has been included in the Top 400 of the best workplaces in Italy by Panorama magazine. The survey was conducted in collaboration with the independent German research institute Statista. More than 15,000 employees of all Italian companies with at least 250 people were interviewed online and anonymously, without contacting the companies concerned. The evaluations of the collaborators allowed Markas to be among the top 10 in the services sector. External perceptions by employees belonging to companies in the same sector were also taken into account.

The economic magazine Südtirol Panorama has published its special issue dedicated to the Top 300 of the best South Tyrolean companies in 2018.
Markas, 14th in the last edition, confirms itself among the local excellences, climbing up another position and gaining the 13th place. The conducted analysis compares many factors, not only the turnover. We find Markas in 18th place in the ranking of companies with the highest profit and 3rd as the largest employer in the region.
A result that fills us with pride and that the magazine Südtirol Panorama celebrated by dedicating an article to our new headquarter in Bolzano, as a symbol of investment in the well-being of our current and future employees.

“For transmitting all the passion and desire to get involved, for the enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge that you have also transmitted to us”. For this reason, Haidrun Achammer-Kasslatter, president of Markas, awarded to the ten winners of the first Mario Kasslatter scholarship, established in memory of the company’s founder, on the fifth anniversary of his death. The award, dedicated to the children of Markas employees, includes participation in a 7-day study trip to Brighton (England) including English courses, cultural visits and excursions. The jury, composed by Alfredo De Massis, teacher and director of the Center for the management of family businesses at the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano, Stefano Cavada, Food Blogger and Agnese Bottaro, HR Consultant at EasyRECrue, chose the winners from among several participants coming from all over Italy, aged between 16 and 25 years. School performance, family income and motivation letter were the three elements for the selection of the first 20 finalists. The shortlisted candidates then participated in the second phase of the selection process by sending a short video with the aim of winning over the jury for their originality and determination and thus becoming one of the 10 winners.

By next year Markas will have a new headquarter in Bolzano. Employees will move to the new 40 metre high building at the beginning of 2019 and will find there spaceful offices, meeting rooms, common areas and numerous other places designed as meeting and sharing spaces, surrounded by hanging gardens.
In addition to the attention to sustainability, which will enable the tower to be certified as ClimateHouse, great importance has been given to the employees’ real needs, with functional, flexible and personalized interior areas.

The Cravino canteen of the University of Pavia, completely renovated last year by Markas and inaugurated in December 2017, is now open in the evening.
The students responded with great enthusiasm to the initiative: “The voice is still spreading but we have an average of 50 meals per evening“, says Edisu President Paolo Benazzo with satisfaction. According to tender documents the canteen would produce about 25 thousand meals per year, but on the basis of daily meals served since the reopening until today the numbers will settle on about 65 thousand per year.

Markas in 2018 ranks amongst the best 50 places to work for in our country, according to Great Place to Work Italia and on the basis of anonymous employee evaluations. In the classification published by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Markas took the 11th place as the only family enterprise in the field of cleaning, catering and complementary services alongside giants like American Express, Hilton and Lidl. Markas is at its third recognition by Great Place to Work and the good ranking of 2018 is also confirmed by the numbers: 91% of the employees feels proud to work for Markas; 90% says that their managers act honestly and ethically; 85% praises their availability and says that it is easy to talk with them. And again, 93% confirms that every new assumption is received in a positive way and every new employee feels welcome. Almost 80% feels to be part of a ‘family’. “We are delighted with this excellent result,” says Evelyn Kirchmaier-Kasslatter, Markas General Manager, “because it is a recognition by employees for employees. This survey helps us to understand in which areas we can still improve”. On February 15th Claudia Flaim, Sales Director of service provider Markas, attended the press conference “Two years of South Tyrolean Procurement Law”. Also this year Markas committed itself for the community, contributing to the reconstruction of some areas struck by the earthquake of Central Italy. The distribution of breast milk at the nursery school is one of the main innovations of the new catering service of the municipality of Rapallo, which will be managed by service provider Markas for the next five years. “Already in occasion of the open day at the nursery school there were numerous requests and during the year even more mothers became interested”, says Filippo Lasinio, councillor of education. On the 5th of december at Pavia the grand opening of the new University canteen Cravino (Edisu), which has been completely renovated during the last months and is managed by the South Tyrolean service provider Markas, took place. The kitchen is equipped with innovative technologies, follows the rules of healthy nutrition and will serve an average of 800 dishes per day. But the new structure is also thought as a meeting place for the over 8.000 students of the nearby institutions: in addition to the restaurant there are a cafeteria, a bookstore and recreation rooms. “We implemented the best of our services in order to create an attractive place for the students and a functional working environment for our employees”, explains Armin Boschetto, Markas director production food. At the award ceremony yesterday at the Parco dei Principi hotel in Rome, Markas was honoured with the European Cleaning & Hygiene Award in the category “Sustainability – Best Practice in the Application” for the second year in a row. Markas has set itself the goal of reducing the environmental impact of cleaning process and improving the quality of service. With the introduction of cleaning products from Werner & Mertz, which have been certified with the EcoLabel and Cradle to Cradle certification, the cleaning service in the hospital of Montichiari has been made more sustainable. The results showed that the consumption of cleaning agents could be reduced by 40% through the pre-impregnation of the mops and that the consumption in the surface cleaning was 30% lower and unpleasant odors could be combated by the use of safe cleaning agents.

In September 2017 the company has established a development programme designed to ensure the hygiene-health safety of products of animal origin and the avoidance of animal suffering. “With this programme we aim at further promoting the philosophy of ethical thinking” says Andrea Tezzele, Quality and Control Directior at Markas. “We consider cage-rearing a negative practice that does not represent our principles of environmental and social responsability”.

Health, nutrition and sport: these are the keywords of “Foodsport”, a nutritional education project initiated by service provider Markas, the volleyball association Bluvolley and the University of Verona. The project, which consists of a series of meetings and information events, aims at providing information on a correct diet in connection with physical activity. On Saturday, October 1, 2016, service provider Markas celebrated the completion of the construction works at the new refectory of the elementary school of Nave, where Markas had won the contract for the provision of food in the local schools. “Healthy food for smart people!” was the motto of this year’s edition of the Brain Food Day, which the canteen service provider Markas has organized on the 21th and 23th of April in the university canteens of Bolzano and Bressanone. A great culinary partnership initiative signed Dègust’Alp, was organized last Thursday, October 16, 2014, at the Markas canteen in Cuneo. David Leroy, a French chef from the UPC Unité de Préparation Culinaire de Digne, was hosted by the Markas cooking center in Cuneo, where he prepared a typical dish from beyond the Alps: the Ratatouille.
David Leroy then spent lunchtime with elementary school children, talking to them about the importance of linking the cuisine to local products. The meeting with the French chef and his culinary art was set up as one of the final steps of Dégust’Alp. Dégust’Alp is a project putting attention on local products and is promoted by the Chamber of Commerce of Cuneo in collaboration with Markas. The last stage will be the presentation of the project, on October 24th at the Salone del Gusto in Turin by the Responsible for Nutrition Hygiene Of Foods at Markas.

After graduating as a cook from the School of Hotel Management in Merano, he started his working career in several hotels and restaurants in South Tyrol.
Today Daniel Zanelotto is the chef cook of the University Canteen of Bolzano, which is managed since 2005 by Markas.
