WALTHERPARK: Robotics in professional cleaning.
Since its opening, we have been responsible for cleaning WaltherPark in Bolzano. Our cleaning team is supported by an autonomous floor-cleaning robot, supervised by our staff, which takes care of the floors in the common areas.
Spacious areas, always clean, tidy and welcoming.
Maintaining high cleaning standards in a shopping centre requires careful planning and a constant on-site presence. Large areas to clean, a continuous flow of visitors and the need to keep spaces tidy and welcoming at all times make the organisation and management of cleaning services particularly challenging.
Our cleaning services, from 6:00 AM to 10:30 PM.
WaltherPark is a large shopping centre with over 80 stores, located in the heart of Bolzano. Since its opening in October 2025, we have been responsible for cleaning the entire facility, with a dedicated team of 24 employees and a site supervisor. Our cleaning activities begin every morning at 6:00 AM, before the shopping centre opens to the public. Throughout the day, our team ensures that common areas and restrooms remain clean, tidy and welcoming. Cleaning operations finish at 7:30 PM in the retail areas and at 10:30 PM in the Mercato Centrale food court.
In such a dynamic environment, technology can play a key role in streamlining cleaning operations and ensuring consistently high service standards.
The role of robotics.
At WaltherPark, an autonomous floor-cleaning robot is used to clean the floors in the common areas.
The robot operates across three levels of the shopping centre, level -1, ground floor and level 1, following a rotating cleaning schedule. Typically, two floors are cleaned each day according to a predefined plan. Cleaning takes place at night, when the shopping centre is closed to visitors. This allows for thorough floor cleaning without disrupting the normal use of the facilities.
The robot follows pre-programmed routes and carries out floor-cleaning tasks autonomously. However, its operation is continuously supervised by our staff, who monitor its performance and step in whenever necessary.
One of the key advantages of this solution is the robot’s ability to manage most of its operating cycle independently. Once cleaning is complete, the robot automatically returns to its service station, where it empties the dirty water, refills with fresh water and recharges its battery, ready for the next cleaning cycle. After approximately 90 minutes of operation, a member of our cleaning team carries out a routine inspection and maintenance check, cleaning the brushes and squeegees to ensure optimal cleaning performance. This combination of autonomous technology and human supervision helps maintain consistently high cleaning standards and ensures reliable, uninterrupted service.
The benefits for cleaning operations.
The introduction of robotics has delivered tangible improvements in both operational efficiency and work organisation. Thanks to its autonomous operation, the robot delivers consistent, high-quality floor cleaning while helping to streamline cleaning schedules and workflows. By automating much of the process, it has also reduced the need to use a ride-on scrubber dryer.
Other key benefits include more efficient use of resources, less time spent on floor cleaning and the ability to assign staff to tasks that require greater human involvement. Together, these improvements contribute to greater overall efficiency and a more effective cleaning service.
Technology as a tool, not an end in itself.
The WaltherPark project demonstrates how innovation can deliver tangible results when integrated into a well-structured and collaborative approach to service delivery. Technology is not an end in itself, but a tool to improve service quality and support people in their everyday work.
