Why is ISO 50001 so important, and why has Markas decided to invest in this certification?
Certifications are a key tool for Markas to ensure, and to demonstrate, that business processes keep critical aspects under control.
ISO 50001 certifies that our energy management system complies with the highest standards. This means that we are able to address all topics related to energy efficiency in a structured way, to monitor energy intensive processes, and to ensure compliance with current regulations. In addition, the certification simplifies the fulfillment of certain legal obligations.

How does ISO 50001 align with Markas’ sustainability strategy?
Controlling energy consumption is a central element of sustainability. Every activity in our lives requires energy, and its production often involves a significant use of resources. Eliminating waste and optimizing processes within our control means reducing the environmental impact of Markas, with the objective of achieving greater sustainability.
There is also an economic advantage. Every step toward energy savings corresponds to tangible cost reductions.
What challenges and opportunities do you see for the future of energy sustainability at Markas?
The main challenge is without doubt decarbonization. The paradigm based on the use of fossil fuels for transport, energy production, heating, or even cooking will not be sustainable for much longer.
For a large company such as Markas, being a leader in this change can create standards capable of influencing the entire market. In practical terms, the electrification of industrial kitchens (a central element in collective catering), the implementation of smart systems for climate control, and the automation of processes across all our business divisions already represent very promising technological and behavioral solutions for the immediate future.

How did you become an Energy Manager? Could you describe a typical day in your role?
My passion for energy started a long time ago, also thanks to the awareness of this topic within my family. Over time, this passion developed and led me to study and explore energy issues at the university level.
My typical day is very diverse. It ranges from negotiating energy contracts to practical interventions aimed at improving efficiency in specific facilities or business processes. What I value most, however, is working on efficiency improvement projects. In these activities I can interact with suppliers, manage technical aspects, and occasionally travel to different sites.
